Too big, will fail. Megaevents and protest participation

    Get PDF
The paper examines the relationship between "social democratic megaevents" (Olympic Games and World Expos) and political protests. It tries to analyze the reasons that led these popular ceremonies to act in our societies as catalysts of social conflict and activators of an "agonistic citizenship". Today some structural characteristics of the network society - growth of urban populations; increase in migration flows; widening of socioeconomic disparities - determined a renewed "political" interest for these great public rituals, which in a previous season of the modernity had shown themselves capable to patch up the lacerations of the social fabric. But in recent years something is broken in the relationship between megaevents and urban populations and we are witnessing a growing antagonism against events historically conceived with a function of social "glue". The aim is therefore to reflect on the meaning of this "antagonistic drift" of "social democratic megaevents" through the analysis of a specific case study: the Attitudine NoExpo Network (Milan 2015). We identified four crucial dimensions to trace the NoExpo movement's physiognomy and define the reasons for its opposition to the world fair: the historical relation between Milan and a cultural form of antagonism; the crucial role of the territorial factor in the formation and evolution of the movement; the centrality of the practices in the structuring of the movement's identity; the adoption of an instrumental and tactical approach in the choice and use of media

THINS project: Intermediary report on the SPH code parallelization and validation for free surface

    Get PDF
In this preliminary report we have presented the performance results of the parallelization of the Armando SPH code on the GPU platform. The results are very encouraging, since a factor of more than 60 on the performance of a CPU core is obtained using an NVIDIA Tesla Card. It appears that GPU acceleration is perfectly suited for the method and on the basis of the profiling analysis it appears that further margin of improvement is possible through a more efficient use of the shared memory of the card and a reduction in the register usage, to maximize the operational throughput of the computational kernels. In the final report, the code will be further optimized and applied to more complex problems of liquid metal flow and target design

ARMANDO, a SPH code for CERN Some theory, a short tutorial, the code description and some examples

    Get PDF
The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics methodologies may be a useful numerical tool for the simulation of particle beam interaction with liquid targets and obstacles. ARMANDO code is a state of the art SPH code interfaced with FLUKA and capable to solve these problems. This report presents the basic theoretical elements behind the method, describes the most important aspects of the implementation and shows some simple examples

    CASTEM 2000 interfacing capabilities

    Get PDF
In this set of examples we want to show the CASTEM 2000 capabilities to interface with other finite element analysis or physical simulation software. CASTEM2000 is a computer code for the analysis of structures by the finite element method (FEM). The program was developed by the Department of Mechanics and Tecnology (DMT) of the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), it is an high level instrument, that can be used as a support in the design and analysis of components in the nuclear field as in the traditional industrial sector. CASTEM 2000 is a complete system integrating not only the functions of calculation (processing), but also for the construction of the model (proprocessing) and for the evaluation of the results (post-processing). CASTEM 2000 can analyze linear or non-linear, static or dynamic problems in structural mechanics, heat trasfer and so on

CRS4 Target for ESS Simulations with Armando 1.0 Calculation report

    Get PDF
The aim of the report is to gather some information on the transient Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations of the CRS4 spallation target for ESS, run with the CRS4 in-house SPH code Armando. The problem is briefly described in terms of model, material and loading conditions. Some details on the simulation methods are given and the results are discussed, with focus on the splashing phenomenon

In this report a structural analysis of trough module for a Concentrated Solar Power plant is discussed and analyzed in operation and emergency conditions

A numerical analysis of a high temperature solar collecting tube, using helium as an heat transfer fluid

This article analyses the use of a gas as a heat transfer fluid in the absorber tube. The fluid dynamics of the gas in the pipe, the heat-transfer in the system and the stresses and deformations of the pipe structure have been simulated numerically. The resulting flow characteristics, temperature distributions and stresses for a reference test case are discussed, and some possible solutions to enhance the system performance are analyzed
